Dog friendly Keswick

Thursday 19 October 2023

For several years Keswick has branded itself as one of the most dog friendly towns in Britain.

Perhaps it is surprising to learn that not that many years ago, signs in all Keswick pubs used to state : ‘No pets permitted in areas where food is being served, by order of Allerdale Council’

But somewhere down the line the council did a U-turn and it is not uncommon now to see doggie snacks on sale in public houses and hotel bars.

However, the biggest and busiest bar in the town only allows Guide Dogs on the premises and the same strict rule applies in their big outdoor drinking area as well, this outlet being The Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, owned by Wetherspoons.

Most dog owners are responsible types, but it is not uncommon to see dogs up on pub seats and some dogs can be very noisy. At the end of the day, maybe some dogs would probably prefer not to be dragged into a busy bar, but they have absolutely no choice in the matter.
